The Writing Proficiency Project (in Swedish Skrivkompetens) started out in 2014 and is a collaboration between Åbo Akademi University in Finland and Stockholm University in Sweden. The aim of the project is to study students’ (11-19 year olds) Swedish writing proficiency in different language environments in Finland and Sweden in order to support the development of written Swedish language.
The project highlights students’ development of written language against a larger register variation. The development is studied mainly through analysis of texts, genres and multimodal texts written by students in different ages. Furthermore, comparisons are made between students with Swedish as a first and second language in order to identify potential textual and genre related features that are tied to individual language proficiency as well as the local lingustic and educational environment.
The project contributes with knowledge about aspects on how students with Swedish as their first or second language write, and on differences that form the basis for educational development. The design of the project promotes collaboration across disciplines and is expected to produce results that interest both theoreticians and practitioners in education and linguistics.
The research project is funded by Aktiastiftelsen i Vasa, Högskolestiftelsen i Österbotten and Svenska kulturfonden.
